What do I do if I smell gas in the home or office?
Do:
- Immediately ensure that all your appliances are turned off (if you suspect a gas leak in your home.)
- Make sure that you also extinguish all cigarettes and matches.
- Open doors or windows, to let the gas escape - and keep them open until the leak has been stopped.
- Shut off the gas supply to your home by turning the main gas valve off this is located near your main gas meter. If you're unsure how to do this follow the instructions. The main gas valve is off when the 'T' handle is pointing across the pipe. Turn the tap until it resembles the position in the diagram overleaf. If your meter valve does not have a handle, use a wrench or a spanner. Give the valve 1/4 turn clockwise (eg. 12-3 o'clock).

Don't
- Try to track the gas leak yourself with a naked flame.
- Operate any electrical switches either on or off.
